Decriminalizing Disability: Special Education Rights for Youth in the Criminal and Juvenile Legal System<br /><br />Presenters: Jessica Gingold &amp; Mike Shea, Equip for Equality<br /><br />Please join Equip for Equality, a non-profit organization here in Illinois that advocates for those with special needs, for a Webinar via Zoom to discover and learn about resources available regarding Special Education Law, presented by attorneys from EFE.<br /><br />Summary: We will review the school-to-confinement pipeline and how effective education advocacy can be a tool for preventing mis-incarceration through both out-of-court and in-court advocacy. Defense attorneys will review basic education and disability rights law and gain the skills to identify common education and disability issues, including those related to trauma exposure, that arise when representing young people in the juvenile and criminal legal system. We will share some creative disability rights advocacy strategies that could be employed throughout a case in juvenile and adult court. The training will also provide information about Equip for Equality’s Decriminalizing Disability:Education Justice Project and ways we can collaborate with defense attorneys in raising these issues and addressing educational needs of clients, generally.<br /><br />Goals:<br /> - Review IDEA, ADA/Section 504, and School Discipline Laws<br /> - Identify most prevalent disabilities of youth in court system and tips for issue-spotting<br /> - Expand understanding of how exposure to trauma could be raised in educational and court advocacy<br /> - Brainstorm creative ways to utilize disability law in juvenile and adult court litigation<br /> - Understand EFE’s model, resources we offer, and how we can collaborate<br /><br />Participants will receive 1 hour of CLE for this webinar.
