Join Activating Change and the National Association of State Head Injury Administrators (NASHIA) for an engaging and interactive Learning Lab focused on the intersection of brain injury and the criminal legal system.
The CDC has stated that brain injury in the justice system is a significant public health challenge. Research shows that 40-90% of incarcerated individuals have a history of brain injury compared to 8% in the general public. Further, brain injury specific resource facilitation (case management) and simple strategies can lead to better outcomes for this client population.
Designed as a foundational and practical overview for public defense and legal aid communities, Judy Dettmer and Kelly Miller of NASHIA will discuss the widespread impact of brain injuries within the criminal legal system and enable participants to:
* Gain an understanding of brain injury prevalence, causes, and symptoms.
* Articulate the benefits of brain injury screening and use an evidence-based screening tool.
* Understand the risks for adverse lifetime challenges experienced by individuals living with a brain injury and why this is critical in assessing needs.
* Implement simple support strategies to assist individuals with brain injury in successfully navigating the criminal legal system.
This session is designed for all members of the public defense and legal aid communities including attorneys, client advocates, and other staff. Participants will be encouraged to raise questions and share about their experiences representing individuals who may have experienced a brain injury.
