About this event
Persons with intellectual disability are over-represented in the criminal legal system—they receive worse plea deals, longer sentences, and spend more time incarcerated than similarly situated individuals. At least 10% of the incarcerated population has intellectual disability. Yet, many defense attorneys are not trained to identify whether a client has intellectual disability, and even if such a disability is identified, many attorneys are unsure how to incorporate that information into their representation. This training, presented by the Second Look Network, will address how to identify whether a client shows signs of intellectual disability and what to do once such identification is made, focusing on post-conviction representation. The goal of this training is to empower participants to advocate for clients with intellectual disability.
Presenters: Katie Kronick, Asst. Professor of Law at University of Baltimore School of Law, and author of "Left Behind Again: Intellectual Disability and the Resentencing Movement" & Claude Heffron, Stein Center Fellow at Pashman, Stein, Walder & Hayden.
