About this event

Illinois law authorized courts and counties to charge fees and fines to youth and their families at every stage of the juvenile court process. Fees and fines range from $25 to over $800 and can quickly add up to thousands of dollars for a single family, depending on which county they live in. Practices across counties are inconsistent, creating a patchwork of economic injustice falling particularly hard on low-income youth in some suburban and downstate regions.

The JDRC, in collaboration with the Legislation and Policy Clinic at Loyola University Chicago School of Law and their partners at Debt Free Justice Illinois, presents this training focused on recent legislation that eliminated almost all fines and fees for youth in Illinois.

This free online session will address the history of this reform effort and provide a detailed examination of just what this new law covers. We will discuss what this means for Illinois youth and provide tips for practitioners and space to answer your questions about this new law. More information, as it becomes available, will be posted here. One hour of Illinois Professionalism CLE is expected for this training.

TO REGISTER: please email Susan.Sitki@osad.state.il.us and provide your ARDC# (if you want CLE) along with your email address. Please register via email to ensure you are registered and receive CLE credit.

A Zoom link will be sent out to registrants the day before the program.
