About this event

This 90-minute program, presented by the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, examines pregnancy outcomes most frequently subject to surveillance and prosecution—including self-managed abortion, concealed birth, and fetal demise. The discussion will be grounded in medical science and clinical decision-making, with a critical focus on how harm is often misattributed in both legal and clinical settings.

The session will also address the broader drivers of adverse birth outcomes such as structural inequities, chronic disease, inadequate prenatal care, environmental exposures, and psychosocial stress. We will also delve into how these factors are frequently overlooked in favor of substance-related explanations.
